How to Choose an SEO Company in India (Red Flags to Avoid)
You run a business, not a search engine. So when it comes time to hire an SEO company, you have to trust people whose work you can't easily judge. That gap is exactly where bad agencies survive. They sell confidence you can't verify and reports you can't read.
This guide is written for the person signing the cheque. It walks through what a real SEO partner looks like, the warning signs that should make you pause, and the questions to ask before money changes hands. We run an agency in Indore, and we'll be honest about how we work too. The goal is simple: help you spend well, whether or not you hire us.
First, know what SEO actually buys you
SEO is the practice of making your website easier for Google to find, understand, and recommend to people searching for what you sell. Done well, it brings visitors who are already looking, at a cost that drops over time.
Here's the part agencies skip. SEO is slow. For a new or neglected site in a competitive space, meaningful movement usually takes three to six months, sometimes longer. Google controls the rankings, not the agency. A good partner improves the things that influence rankings content, site health, relevance, trust then measures what happens. Anyone who talks about rankings as if they own them is selling a story. Judge agencies on process and honesty, not on the size of their promise.
Red flags that should make you walk away
Some warning signs are loud enough to end the conversation:
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. No one can guarantee a position Google decides. This is the clearest sign of either dishonesty or inexperience.
- Vague deliverables. If you can't tell what you're paying for each month, you'll never know if it's working.
- No access to your own accounts. Search Console, Analytics, and your website must stay in your name. Agencies that hold them hostage are protecting themselves, not you.
- Reports full of made-up metrics. "Impressions" and "visibility scores" with no source mean little. Real proof comes from Search Console and GA4.
- Pressure to sign today. Urgency is a sales tactic, not a strategy.
One or two of these should slow you down. Three should stop you.
Questions to ask before you sign
You don't need to be technical to ask good questions. You need to listen to how they answer.
- "What will you actually do in the first 90 days?" A clear answer beats a polished pitch.
- "Which tools do you use to measure results?" Look for Google Search Console, GA4, and a crawler like Screaming Frog, not a private dashboard only they can see.
- "Can I keep ownership of my website and accounts?" The answer must be yes.
- "What happens if rankings don't move in three months?" Honest agencies explain how they diagnose and adjust. They don't panic or overpromise.
- "Can you show me the raw Search Console data, not just a summary?"
Watch for people who answer plainly. Confidence built on data sounds different from confidence built on hope.
Match the agency to your kind of business
SEO isn't one skill. A team that grows an ecommerce store may know little about ranking a local clinic, and the reverse is just as true.
If you run a hospital or a skin clinic, you need people who understand local search, Google Business Profile, and the trust signals medical searchers look for. If you sell products online, you need someone fluent in product pages, category structure, and how buyers search near the moment of purchase. A restaurant or hotel lives and dies by "near me" searches and reviews. Ask the agency where they've done similar work and what changed. You're not looking for identical case studies. You're checking whether they understand how your customers actually search in India, in your city, in your language mix.
How we work at ExtroVision, honestly
We run an SEO practice from Indore for clients across India and abroad, including hospitals, clinics, hotels, and D2C brands. Here's what we tell every prospect before they pay us anything.
We never guarantee rankings. We can't, and neither can anyone. What we do is fix the technical and content issues holding a site back, then track results in your own Google Search Console and GA4 so you see the same numbers we do. If clicks and impressions aren't moving, you'll know, because the data is yours. Our work is capability, not magic. You can read more about our approach on our SEO & Google growth service page, and if it fits, talk to us. If it doesn't, at least you'll hire someone better informed.
How to compare two shortlisted agencies
Once you've filtered out the obvious red flags, you'll often have two reasonable options. Price alone is a poor tiebreaker. Cheap work that damages your site costs far more to undo.
Compare them on four things. First, clarity: whose plan can you explain back in one sentence? Second, ownership: who lets you keep full control of your accounts and data? Third, communication: who answers your "what if it doesn't work" question without flinching? Fourth, evidence: who shows you real Search Console data from past work instead of screenshots you can't verify. The agency that scores well on all four is usually the safer bet, even if it isn't the cheapest quote on the table.
- No honest agency guarantees Google rankings; treat that promise as a red flag, not a selling point.
- Keep ownership of your website, Search Console, and GA4 accounts. Never let an agency hold them.
- Judge agencies on their process and honesty, not the size of their promise.
- Match the agency's experience to your business type, whether that's healthcare, ecommerce, or hospitality.
- Ask for raw Search Console data, not polished dashboards with metrics you can't trace.
- When comparing finalists, weigh clarity, ownership, communication, and evidence over price alone.
FAQs
How long before SEO shows results?
For most sites, meaningful movement takes three to six months, sometimes longer in competitive markets. SEO builds over time. Any agency promising fast, guaranteed jumps is either inexperienced or not being straight with you.
Why won't a good SEO agency guarantee rankings?
Because Google decides rankings, not the agency. A credible partner improves the factors that influence rankings and then measures the outcome in your Search Console. A guarantee of position one is a warning sign to walk away.
How much should SEO cost in India?
It varies widely with your industry, competition, and site size, so be wary of one-price-fits-all quotes. Focus less on the cheapest number and more on what's delivered, whether you keep account ownership, and how results are proven.
